After extending legal cover to all slums that came up prior to January 1, 2000, the Congress-led Democratic Front government has now legitimised occupants of protected slum homes till 2013.

In a notification issued by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan-led Urban Development (UD) department on March 3, the government has said “it intends to rehabilitate slum-dwellers who have been residing continuously for at least one year in protected slum structures.”

The slum area, known as Bhagat Singh Colony, adjacent to the sixth lane of Dwarakanagar, is considered both a boon and a bane.

“Boon in the sense, a robber can never get away from here if at all he enters the colony. The slum-dwellers keep a close watch on the houses and they are awake till late in the night. We also enjoy their services in the form of domestic help and dhobi without any irregularities,” says Akella Venkata Purushotham, one of the old residents of the colony.

All the slums in the city will be brought under the water supply network by 2015, said LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Sayed Ashraful Islam to the Jatiya Sangshad.
