The second national workshop of the NRLP research project, held at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi, on April 8-9, 2009, mainly focused on strategic issues of Indian irrigation that require immediate attention. The issues highlighted at the workshop contribute to a cluster of short- to long-term strategies for a perspective plan for the Indian water sector.

IN a welcome move, the farmers of Tiruvallur district will maintain lakes and tanks themselves for irrigation purposes henceforth. To facilitate this, water users associations (WUAs) have been for med for the first time in the district.

This study makes an attempt to examine analytically to prove how tank rehabilitation is useful for both direct (farmers) and indirect (landless, poor, women and other vulnerable group) tank users. The tank systems have provided insulation from dependence on rains to the people living in the fragile rainfed areas.

This latest World Bank document stresses on the inclusion of ecosystem-based approaches to national and regional adaptation strategies. It points out that access to funds will help communities to address climate change at all levels.

The irrigation re-awakening project with the World Bank assistance of Rs.385 million has taken initiatives to rehabilitate Giants Tank, one of the major irrigation tanks in the Mannar district, Project Director P.H. Sugathadasa said at a progress review meeting at the site last week.
