KAARAPIDAGAI: A public hearing on the proposed Thirukuvalai Thermal Power Station was abruptly called off amid public opposition on Friday.

The project envisages the setting up of a 1820 MW coal-based thermal power plant and a 150 MW thermal power station by the Tridem Group at Kaarapidagai and Vizhundhumaavadi at Keevazhur block in Nagapattinam.

Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde today assured the State Government of a thorough assessment of the cumulative impact on downstream Assam by the proposed hydro-electric projects on the upper reaches of the Brahmaputra in Arunachal Pradesh. The assessment will be done by a third party.
