Proposed plant is close to wildlife sanctuaries

Up until 1995, the power sector in Sri Lanka was more or less carbon neutral as over 95% of the requirement was produced from hydro-power. In order to meet in increasing demand of the country during the last 13 years the government took steps to establish oil fired power plants.

It is now four days that residents of Bathinda and adjoining areas have not seen a clear sun because of a thick layer of smoke coupled with patches of cloud in the sky. The situation was worst this morning when the sun appeared as a red ball in the sky because of smog and disappeared as the day progressed.

KAARAPIDAGAI: A public hearing on the proposed Thirukuvalai Thermal Power Station was abruptly called off amid public opposition on Friday.

The project envisages the setting up of a 1820 MW coal-based thermal power plant and a 150 MW thermal power station by the Tridem Group at Kaarapidagai and Vizhundhumaavadi at Keevazhur block in Nagapattinam.

Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde today assured the State Government of a thorough assessment of the cumulative impact on downstream Assam by the proposed hydro-electric projects on the upper reaches of the Brahmaputra in Arunachal Pradesh. The assessment will be done by a third party.
