In the context of achieving a national set target of 60 GW by 2022, a study was carried out in Kayathar, Tuticorin district, Tamil Nadu, India on noise propagation from wind turbines. Acoustic and non-acoustic parameters were measured according to IEC 61400-11 at wind speeds of 4–13 and 0.7–8.6 m/s.

Ministry of New & Renewable Energy releases the Policy for Repowering of the Wind Power Projects for information of the stakeholders and general public. Objective of the Repowering Policy is to promote optimum utilisation of wind energy resources by creating facilitative framework for repowering.

The environmental benefits of wind energy as an alternative for conventional energy sources are clear and compelling. With an aim to entail a more conducive policy & investment framework to spur more competition and private sector participation for development of wind projects.

The European offshore wind industry attracted a record €14 billion in new investments during the first six months of 2016. Seven projects reached final investment decision this year, financing a total of 3.7GW of new capacity. The UK accounted for nearly three-quarters of the new investments.

The Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) launched a new report: “Supply Chain, Port Infrastructure and Logistics Study” for offshore wind development in the states of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu in India. This study is a significant step forward in preparing a roadmap for offshore wind power in India by the GWEC led FOWIND consortium.

Lightning is one of the major threats to multimegawatt wind turbines and a concern for modern aircraft due to the use of lightweight composite materials. Both wind turbines and aircraft can initiate lightning, and very favorable conditions for lightning initiation occur in winter thunderstorms. Moreover, winter thunderstorms are characterized by a relatively high production of very energetic lightning. This paper reviews the different types of lightning interactions and summarizes the well-known winter thunderstorm areas.

Increasing economies of scale, more competitive supply chains and further technological improvements will continue reducing the costs of solar and wind power. The same factors will also boost the availability of these key renewable power sources at night and in varying weather conditions.

Plans for the world’s biggest offshore wind farm have been thrown into doubt over fears the noise of building it will disturb porpoises.

To ensure healthy and orderly growth of wind power sector in the country, Ministry had issued revised guidelines for onshore wind power projects in June 1996. Clarifications and modification in these guidelines are being issued by the Ministry from time to time.
