Bathinda: Low to very high traces of uranium were detected in water samples taken from tubewells in 43 villages in Bhagta Bhai Ke, Mour, Nathana, Phul and Rampura blocks of the district.

There appears to be considerable opposition from the local population to the Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC) proposed to be set up at Rawatbhata near Kota in Rajasthan. Even as he accepted Punjab’s case for enhanced allocation to augment the rural water supply system, as it faces the problem of presence of uranium, arsenic, and heavy metals in ground water used for drinking, Union Rural Development and Panchayats Minister Jairam Ramesh on Friday advised the State government to introspect and analyse its performance record on utilisation of previous grants for the purpose.

Janardhana Reddy The Uranium Corporation of India and the Karnataka government has signed a memorandum of understanding to set up a uranium ore mining and processing plant in Karnataka. UCIL proposed to invest Rs 550 crore in the plant at Gogi, Saidapur, Diggi and Umardoddi villages at Shahapur taluk of Karnataka’s Yadgir district, a release said here on Monday.

The Karnataka government would help UCIL to obtain permissions, registrations, approvals and clearances from the concerned departments as per the existing policies and rules and regulations of the state government, it said.
