Man eating by leopards has been a major problem in some hilly districts of Uttaranchal particularly since early nineties. This has been a matter of serious concern for Forest Department, politicians, conservationists, scientists and the local people.

Golden mahseer is one of the splendid ecotourism species of the Government of Uttaranchal should strive to conserve in order to enhance the prospects of nature tourism opportunities in the state. In Uttaranchal the golden mahseer is largely confined to lotic habitats.

An empirical measure of the value of forests

Uttaranchal is one of the newly formed states of the Indian Union which falls under the North Western Himalayan (NWH) zone. Even though Uttaranchal state as a whole is surplus with food production, the hill districts depicts a different picture. They face a shortage of about 29 thousand tonnes of foodgrains. Eleven out of the 13 districts in Uttaranchal come under hilly area of NWH region.

The indigenous knowledge of Vaidyas (the traditional healers) on the making the herbal drugs was studied in the Uttaranchal state of India. Interview and semi-structured questionnaire surveys were conducted among 60 traditional Vaidyas on the preparation of various herbal drugs. The survey has resulted in compilation of 135 herbal drugs, which are used by them for curing 55 types of ailments.
