When almost the entire country is on high alert over Swine flu and when the hyped national media is paying prime-time attention to it, Bihar is suffering from cerebral malaria. At least six people have died due to the disease and over thousands are in the grip of it.

A frightening spread of encephalitis and cerebral malaria in Bihar's northern and southern districts has killed at least 69 children since July first week, underlining what health experts and Opposition leaders have termed as insufficient medical facilities, poverty and lack of hygiene in the state's rural belts.

SIVASAGAR, Aug 9: The State Government will soon set up an encephalitis detection centre in Sivasagar in view of the alarming rise of encephalitis cases in the district. The district, along with Dibrugarh, is the epicentre of encephalitis due to the peculiar susceptible conditions.

MUMBAI: While hundreds visited Kasturba Hospital in Chinchpokli on Thursday to get themselves tested for H1N1, at least a score were brought to
the same hospital in seriously ill condition. The reason for their plight wasn't the swine flu, but the round-the-year pestilence: malaria.

New Delhi: A big challenge for the state health department during Commonwealth Games 2010 will be to ensure there is no outbreak of an epidemic of dengue and other vector-borne diseases. Instead of drawing up a combined action plan, the Delhi government and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) are busy in a blame game.
