The case was against grant of Environmental and Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) Clearance (EC) by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) vide letter dated November 2, 2016 for ‘upgradation of existing ship recycling yard at Alang Sosiya, Gujarat for undertaking safe and environmentally sound ship recycling operations by M/s Gujarat Maritime Board’.

Written submission by the Conservation Action Trust & Others dated 18/11/2020. Conservation Action Trust had filed the appeal before the National Green Tribunal (NGT) challenging the Environment Clearance of November 2, 2016 granted for the proposed expansion of Alang-Sosiya Ship Recycling Yard (SRY) from the present ship breaking capacity of 400 ships per year to 600 ships per year at Alang and Sosiya villages, Bhavnagar district, Gujarat.

Action taken report on behalf of Delhi Pollution Control Committee in compliance to the National Green Tribunal order of May 20, 2020.

The matter related to management of construction and demolition (C&D) waste. The NGT had directed that steps should be taken to ensure increase of off take and lifting of C&D recycling material. Capacity for processing of waste needed to be adequately enhanced within a specified timeline. Also, it was not desirable to allow dumping of C&D waste at Bhalswa landfill site, which had already crossed its capacity.
