Shillong: The Shillong bench of the Guahati High Court has directed the State Government to submit a report on whether provisions of the Forest Conservation Act 1980 has been complied while granting permission of establishment of cement plants and limestone mines in Jaintia Hills. Initiating a suo-moto public interest Litigation petition, the court on July 27 directed the government to submit the report in the form of an affidavit within four weeks time.

Shillong: The Shillong bench of Gauhati High Court has sought a report from the state government on the recent coal mine tragedy in Garo Hills and also on the steps taken to ensure safety of miners in the State.

Accepting a suo-moto PIL on the coal mine mishap, which reportedly claimed 15 lives, the bench directed the state government to submit the report in the form of affidavit by August 28.

New Delhi The Supreme Court on Monday asked Mahanadi Coalfields to supply 2,84,750 tonne of coal to Jindal Stainless’ 1.6 million tonne-integerated stainless steel plant in Orissa.

A Bench, headed by Justice KS Radhakrishnan, continued its earlier order asking the Mahanadi Coalfields' to supply 25% of the agreed quantity, as per the coal supply agreement of February 2009, to Jindal Stainless’ plant till the disposal of the petition filed by the Ratan Jindal's firm before the Orissa High Court. JSL's entitlement under the February 2009 contract was 11,39,000 metric tonne per annum.

The Pollution Control Board is making arrangements to install gadgets to assess environmental pollution in Vengola panchayat in Ernakulam district.

The initiative is being taken in accordance with a Supreme Court directive to assess the pollution levels in the area. T. K. Kurien, a resident of the area, had approached the apex court, seeking relocation of plywood manufacturing units from the residential area. Mr. Kurien said he had filed a writ petition in the Kerala High Court earlier on the issue and an advocates’ commission submitted a report which reportedly sought measures including relocation of the units in order to curb pollution.

Leases with SC panel-nod yet to get legal approvals from Indian Bureau of Mines operations unlikely to start before October

Steel mills in and around Karnataka that are dependent on iron ore from state mines might have to wait for some more time to get fresh supplies, as the resumption of mining is likely to be delayed. Though the Central Empowered Committee (CEC), appointed by the Supreme Court (SC), has approved 12 firms for resuming operations, following acceptance of their reclamation and rehabilitation (R&R) plans, actual mining might start only by October.

The Bombay High Court has asked Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) not to permit manufacturing units within 750 metres of a river from September 1 if existing facilities are not maintained for discharge of effluents.

Under the rules, facilities such as pipelines or Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) are required to be maintained to achieve the stipulated discharge standards. The directive was given by Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice Nitin Jamdar who also asked the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) to constitute within a month a committee for five MIDC estates in the state to monitor functioning of CETPs and for industrial units within MIDC areas.
