A blistering heat wave swept through North and East India on Tuesday claiming two lives in Uttar Pradesh. Delhi recorded a maximum of 43.5 degrees Celsius, three notches above normal, and a minimum of 26.8 degrees Celsius. Two train passengers were found dead at Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh where the temperature touched 42.7 degrees Celsius.

In Punjab and Haryana, the heat wave intensified further with maximum temperatures hovering in the range of 42-45 degrees Celsius.

Three tigers have been found dead in the forests in the Terai region during the past three days, setting alarm bells ringing among wildlife enthusiasts.

The body of a tiger was recovered on Sunday from the Dudhwa National Park in Lakhimpur district and it is suspected that the big cat was probably poisoned to death by poachers. Two more tigers have been found dead in the forests of the neighbouring Pilibhit district. The first tiger was found dead on the May 24 in the Haripur range while the body of the second tiger was spotted barely 24 hours later, just 300 meters from the stream where the body of the first tiger was recovered.

Amid growing clamour to protect the Ganga, Union Minister Jayanthi Natarajan on Sunday said the Centre was committed to saving the river and has sanctioned projects worth more than Rs. 2,500 crore for the purpose.

"The Centre is leaving no stone unturned to ensure a clean Ganga. Projects worth Rs. 2,677 crore have already been sanctioned for the purpose. Of these projects, Rs. 1,342 crore has been earmarked for setting up of sewage treatment plants and other related works in Uttar Pradesh," Natarajan said.

New agriculture and industrial policies are on the anvil for giving a renewed thrust to the development process in Uttar Pradesh. Formulation of new policies formed an integral part of the ambitious 100-point development agenda which has been finalised by the Akhilesh Yadav Government.

The agenda, released by the Government on Thursday, aims at integrated development of the State and includes the farm, industrial, medical and health, education, power, social welfare and infrastructure development sectors. In addition, e-governance will be expanded in the State.

A full bench of the Allahabad High Court on Monday upheld its judgement quashing land acquisition in some villages of Gautam Buddh Nagar district in Uttar Pradesh for development of Noida, Greater Noida and Noida Extension and ordered greater compensation for landowners.
