Concern over decline of Rajasthan's State bird population

The critically-endangered grassland species, the Great Indian Bustard, will be counted in the desert terrain of Rajasthan in the second week of February. Rajasthan, specially its desert region, accounts for maximum population of the bird which is globally threatened and listed in the Red Book of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Jaipur: Malnutrition among children in Rajasthan has taken ominous proportions. The Hungama (Hunger and Malnutrition) survey carried out recently by Naandi Foundation indicates that the situation in many districts has worsened when compared to what it was about a decade back.

The Hungama Survey, released on Tuesday by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, mentions 10 districts in Rajasthan. These districts are among a sample size of 112 districts in the country.

JSW Energy today said it had started full commercial operations at its 1,200-MW Ratnagiri thermal power plant, besides resuming operations at Barmer power project.
The company has started commercial operations of the fourth unit, with 300 MW capacity, at the Ratnagiri plant in Maharashtra yesterday.

The Centre will shortly be making an atlas of the many windmills that are fast being built in this desert district. The atlas will not only help regulate the growth of windmills here but will also keep a track of areas where windmills are being set up.

In a bid to promote alternate sources of energy the state government has been actively pursuing the setting up of windmills in the desert districts of Jaisalmer and Barmer. Not only hundreds of windmills have already been set up in these parts but hundreds more by prominent players are fast coming up.

JAISALMER: The interim order of the Rajasthan High Court banning all mining activities near the IAF stations in western Rajasthan has come as a big relief to the Air Force. Though mining continued for two or three more days after the order, the mining department and police stepped in to stop the work.
