The Delhi government is mulling a study of the species of flora and fauna in the city. The study aims to find out as to which species are suitable for the climate in the city.

JORHAT, May 7: The government dilly-dallying over declaring protected parks, reserves and sanctuaries as eco-sensitive zones as proposed by the Forest Department quite some time ago is harming the conservation efforts to a large extent.

Plankton samples collected from Loktak Lake (a Ramsar site) during November 2002-October 2004 revealed 51 species of Cladocera belonging to 28 genera and 7 families. Loktak lake holds the richest Cladocera biodiversity known from any individual aquatic ecosystem of India, so far.

Environment Ministry will form a comprehensive strategy to counter the threats associated with climate change in association with International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), relevant ministries and other partners.

It was agreed during a meeting of Environment Minister Hameedullah Jan Afridi with Asia IUCN Regional Director Aban Marker Kabraji here on Friday.
