Enable Block:

This is the inaugural edition of the Ecological Threat Register (ETR), which covers 157 independent states and territories.

Within a month (August to September) 2020, more than 1.21 million people in 12 different countries have been affected by floods across Africa and many other countries are currently experiencing more widespread rainfall than usual in the long rain season leading to transboundary flooding in several areas.

The deaths due to accidents have been classified into two broad groups - accidental deaths due to causes attributable to nature and accidental deaths due to causes not attributable to nature.

The monsoon trough is active and lies close to its normal position. It is very likely to be south of its normal Position and continue to be active during next 4-5 days.

Heavy rains in Sudan have intensified over the past week, causing flooding, destruction of infrastructure, houses and livelihoods, and leading to displacement in multiple locations across the country. Khartoum, Blue Nile and River Nile are amongst the most affected states.

The monsoon floods of the year 2020 has an overall impact on the Northern, North-Eastern and South-Eastern region of Bangladesh. The floods has impacted 21 districts of Bangladesh with moderate to severe impact on 16 Districts. Highest peak of the flooding was predicted to be at the Bahadurabad point, with 71% probability of high flooding.

With the rise of water levels in all major three river basins and the south-eastern hill regions coupled with the heavy to very heavy rainfall in the upstream Indian states and inside Bangladesh, the country is likely to witness a prolonged flood inundating low-lying areas in nearly 25 districts.

Interacting storm surges and high water runoff can cause compound flooding (CF) in low-lying coasts and river estuaries. The large-scale CF hazard has been typically studied using proxies such as the concurrence of storm surge extremes either with precipitation or with river discharge extremes. Here the impact of the choice of such proxies is addressed employing state-of-the-art global datasets.

Flood Re is a governmental scheme which, among other things, guarantees insurance affordability and encourages self-protection. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are vital for local economies; their survival is one of the holy grails of economic recovery when flooding impacts communities.

This book discusses the impact of human-induced global climate change on the regional climate and monsoons of the Indian subcontinent, adjoining Indian Ocean and the Himalayas.
