Around 600 wheat growers in 10 villages on the banks of Haro River have suffered badly due to release of water from Khanpur Dam after the recent heavy rains.

A group of farmers led by Jhalu union council nazim Rafaqat Khan Tahirkheli told reporters here on Sunday that excess water in the reservoir was released into the river, and it flooded the wheat crop that was ready for harvesting.

He said that maize is not one of our traditional food items but still Sri Lanka has been able to grow maize and become self-sufficient within one year.

The total production had been used to produce Thriposha and animal food.

This is a great achievement for the country as the belief earlier was that Sri Lanka cannot produce maize.

Rains lashed at many parts of the country during the past two weeks could affect and delay the harvesting of the standing wheat crop in different parts of the country.
