The State Government has allotted Rs. 44 crore to initiate measures to prevent human-animal conflict, Minister for Forests K.T. Pachamal has said.

At the inauguration of the 20th State Forest Department Sports Meet at the Tamil Nadu State Forest Academy on Sunday, he said that the Department would utilise the money to dig trenches to prevent the animals from entering human habitations. Tamil Nadu had 17.5 per cent of its land area under forests. To improve the green cover, the Chief Minister had ordered planting 64 lakh saplings. Likewise, with the help of Japanese funding, the State was implementing a scheme to conserve forests. The allocation for the scheme was Rs. 686 crore.

A number of forest communities have been living in forest fringe areas of the south-western part of the state of West Bengal, India for centuries. From this dry-deciduous Sal (Shorea robusta) forest area, forest villagers collect forest products for their daily household needs as well as they also sell a proportion of products at the local market. In socio-cultural life of these forest communities, the surrounding forest has a great impact. Minor forest products or non-timber forest products (NTFPs) are used for medicine, worship, decoration, jewellery, food, fodder, firewood etc.

SHILLONG: The Megh-alaya People’s Environment Rights Forum (MPERF) has urged Governor Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary to keep on hold his assent to the Meghalaya Forest Regulation (Amendment) Bill, 2012, which was passed by the State Assembly recently.

In a representation submitted to the Governor on Wednesday, the MPERF requested that the Amendment Bill be sent back to the state government for a ‘detailed deliberation’. The representation also stressed on seeking opinion from technical, legal experts and conservationists besides the general public before deciding either in favour or against the amendment.

The forest cover in the country has decreased by 367 sq kms with the green area decreasing in 14 states, as per a forest report released here today.
