Mumbai: At least ten persons were killed in a landslide triggered by heavy rains in coastal Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra in the wee hours today.

The incident occurred at Harne village in Dapoli tehsil at around 2am, police said.

Rescue Rangoon, June 17: Rescue workers were scrambling to provide aid to tens of thousands left homeless in western Burma and neighbouring Bangladesh on Thursday after floods and landslides killed more than 100 people.

Massive landslides triggered by overnight torrential rains killed 53 persons, burying some alive in Bangladesh's sea resort town of Cox's Bazar flattening shanties and makeshift structures.

Four separate landslides hit Cox's Bazar and Bandarban areas burying a number of people and leaving scores of others missing as heavy rains hamperered rescue efforts, the police said.

Mumbai: As part of its preparedness plans for monsoon 2010, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) served the first batch of warning notices on Friday to landslide-prone areas of the eastern suburbs.

The area around Kunwari Pass in Central Himalayas is the source of a number of streams that include Dhaknala, Karmanasa, Patalganga, Belakuchi and Garurganga. The first is the tributary of Dhauliganga whereas the rest drain into Alaknanda. These streams are known for the devastation they have caused in the past, due to the flash floods that followed blockade of these streams due to landslides.

Two persons were killed while 73 others, mostly tourists, had a narrow escape when avalanche struck a mountainous pass, two kilometres short of Changla Top on the Leh-Karu-Tangtse axis, en route to Pangong Lake bordering China in Ladakh region on Tuesday.
