Farmers staged a demonstration to protest the unavailability of urea fertiliser here on Tuesday. They blocked the Choubara Road and threw traffic out of gear by setting tyres ablaze for around three hours.

The urea fertiliser has been in short supply for the past two months, and dealers are selling it in black for Rs900 to Rs1,000 per bag. However, some lucky peasants having government permits get urea at Rs675 per bag, but only after remaining queued up for hours.

Minister for Physical Planning & Works Bijay Kumar Gachhadar said Friday that the spurs damaged by Saptakoshi floods will be restored before the end of the Nepali Calendar - meaning another 7 months - and that repair works are a top priority.
"The repair work on the Koshi embankment has already started," he said speaking at the Reporters Club.

Farmers yesterday blocked highways in Faridpur and Jessore demanding adequate supply of fertilizer.

In Faridpur, farmers barricaded the Dhaka Khulna highway at Modhukhali for about an hour in the morning, disrupting traffic, reports a correspondent. They put trees on the road to obstruct traffic, keeping several hundred vehicles stranded on both sides.

Source there said over 1,000 farmers waited in a long queue in front of a dealers shop at Bagat Bazar since morning.
