Order of the National Green Tribunal regarding state of wetlands in India, 02/09/2016

Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Anand Arya & Others Vs. Union of India & Others dated 02/09/2016 regarding state of wetlands in India. According to the Applicant there are nearly 7,53,647 hectares of wet land as per National Wetland Atlas and out of it 5,54,960 hectares of land are under less than 2.5 hectares, while the remaining 1,98,687 hectares of land are more than 2.5 hectares. According to him these wetlands are located in the protected areas as well as outside the protected area.

Approaches used to evaluate the social impacts of protected areas

Protected areas are a key strategy in conserving biodiversity, and there is a pressing need to evaluate their social impacts. Though the social impacts of development interventions are widely assessed, the conservation literature is limited and methodological guidance is lacking. Using a systematic literature search, which found 95 relevant studies, we assessed the methods used to evaluate the social impacts of protected areas.

Judgement of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Rohit Choudhury Vs. Union of India & Others dated 24/08/2016. The application was filed against the alleged illegal activities including operation of stone crushers, brick kilns, tea factories and other polluting activities in the No Development Zone that was demarcated by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change vide Notification dated 5th July, 1996 around the Numaligarh refinery in Assam.

Sixteen years of change in the global terrestrial human footprint and implications for biodiversity conservation

Human pressures on the environment are changing spatially and temporally, with profound implications for the planet’s biodiversity and human economies. Here we use recently available data on infrastructure, land cover and human access into natural areas to construct a globally standardized measure of the cumulative human footprint on the terrestrial environment at 1 km2 resolution from 1993 to 2009. We note that while the human population has increased by 23% and the world economy has grown 153%, the human footprint has increased by just 9%.
