PANJIM: The state government has assured the High Court that it would draft the state mining policy within three-weeks and that the drafting of the rules is almost complete.

The government has said that the mining policy will come into force from the commencement of the new mining season in September. In an affidavit filed before the Bombay High Court at Goa, the Directorate of Mines and Geology has said that the work of drafting new Goa Minerals Rules 2012 to repeal and replace the 2004 Rules is almost complete and the same will be finalized at the departmental level within a period of three-weeks.

The State government on Monday informed the Karnataka High Court that MP Anil V. Lad and his brother Ashok V. Lad have encroached upon 86 acres and 97 cents of forest land for running their water sports firm and a resort at Sandur.

Pointing out that the supply of electricity in the State, particularly Chennai, is not up to the mark, the Madras High Court on Thursday directed the Chief Engineer (Commercial), TNEB, to file an affidavit detailing the power position and the steps taken to rectify the low voltage problem in and around Chennai.

Despite the expiry of its licence, a sand quarry at Natham (near Anbil) continues to haul several loads of sand every day, according to villagers from neighbouring T. Kalvikudi. In order to bring the issue to the attention of district authorities, a group of farmers from the village submitted a petition to the Collector, on Monday.

“Every day, hundreds of sand lorries ply through T. Kalvikudi from the illegal sand quarry at Natham causing great inconvenience to the locals,” said C. Gurusamy, one of the farmers.

Guwahati: A Division Bench of Gauhati High Court comprising Chief Justice A K Goel and Justice N K Singh has held that the protocol signed between India and Bangladesh on exchange of land can’t be implemented without amending the Constitution and enactment of law.

The land protocol aims at exchange of adversely possessed land by both the countries in Assam and West Bengal border areas. The High Court order came in response to a PIL filed by Sujata Changkakoti and three other advocates.

The Madras High Court has ordered notice to authorities, including the Public Works Department, to file reply in two weeks on a public interest litigation seeking to restrain them from proceeding with sand mining in Kosasthalai river near Gerugampoondi in Tiruvallur district.

The First Bench of Madras High Court, comprising Chief Justice M.Y. Eqbal and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam, also called for records from the authorities concerned after hearing a submission on a PIL filed by K. Venkatesan, president of the Vilapakkam panchayat.

A major fire broke out in the garbage dumping yard in Pallikaranai last Saturday, and thick smoke emanating from it has affected the environment in Velachery, Perungudi, Madipakkam, Taramani and other areas over the past few days.
