JAIPUR: A survey report with quantifiable data on the backwardness of 82 tribes in the state was presented to the state government by the Institute of Development Studies, Jaipur. The report is a comparative study on the social, economic and educational status of more than 91,000 families.

The report has been prepared on the directions of the Rajasthan High Court while hearing a PIL after the state government had granted a special 5% reservation to the Gujjars in the state.

The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the Centre on a petition seeking total ban on the use and manufacturing of plastic bags throughout the country while citing the example of some states which had successfully implemented such a ban.

The notice was issued on a PIL by NGO, Karuna, the Society for Animals and Nature, raising various environment related issues arising out of the large-scale use of plastic bags.

The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the Centre and plastic bag manufacturing companies on a plea seeking complete ban on usage of plastic bags in the country.

A bench headed by Justice G.S. Singhvi also sought the government’s response on the plea to put in place a proper mechanism for disposal of used plastic bags. Environment Ministry rejected forest clearance to Kalu dam in Thane district

While irregularities were surfacing in irrigation projects around Mumbai in early April, the Forest Advisory Committee (FAC) of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) rejected forest clearance to the Kalu dam in Murbad taluka of Thane district, which would have submerged around 1,000 hectares of forest land.
