The global meltdown led to expectations governments would use money to reinvent economies for climate change. The plan was simple: spend obscene amounts of public money in infrastructure and other projects, to stimulate national economies.

MUCH is being written on DST. Some people have even sought legal redress in courts to force the government to undo DST.

Let me give some important reasons why DST is of immense value:

a) The government announced that 250 MW electricity was saved last year through DST. There should really be no other reason needed to repeat DST every year.

Transportation mobility in India has increased significantly in the past decades. From1970 to 2000, motorized mobility (passenger-km) has risen by 888%, compared with an 88% population growth. This contributed to many energy and environmental issues, and an energy strategy incorporates efficiency improvement and other measures needs to be designed.

There was a jamboree in my town recently, a gathering of the powerful and famous, to discuss the climate change agreement the world must carve out in Copenhagen by end 2009. But what happened was rather discomforting: We Indians were publicly lectured, castigated and rapped on our knuckles for being bad boys and girls by one and all.
