Vellore Citizens Welfare Forum appeals to Centre, State

The Vellore Citizens Welfare Forum (VCWF) has appealed to the Centre and the Tamil Nadu government to sincerely and expeditiously implement all the directions of the Supreme Court, issued on August 28, 1996, on a writ petition filed by VCWF in respect of the pollution caused by tanneries in the five districts of Vellore, Erode, Dindigul, Tiruchi and Kancheepuram.

Thanneerpandhal residents’ earlier petitions remain unattended

The public of Thanneerpandhal village in Gudiyatham taluk met the Vellore Collector R. Nanthagopal during the weekly public grievances redressal day camp at the Collectorate here on Monday and submitted to him a memorandum urging him to take immediate steps to close an aluminium factory in the village which has been causing air pollution and the resultant health hazards to the people in the nearby Adi Dravida colony.

Submitting a petition addressed to Baskaran, Member, SHRC on behalf of the neighbourhoods affected by the environmental pollution with the aim of seeking a solution to the problem and enable the NGO to continue its environmental mission, R.T. Rajan, Director of SOLAI said that he has given a hectare of his own land to SOLAI for the farm skills upgradation among poor women farmers. But the land is now submerged in drainage water to a depth of five feet. It has thus turned uncultivable.

A host of drinking water supply projects, totally costing over Rs.30 crore, were commissioned by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa through video-conferencing here on Monday.

Of the projects, a combined water supply project for the Melpuram union and an integrated water treatment plant in Kanyakumari district and the expansion of water supply project for the Villupuram municipality were significant in terms of cost.
