Work on a €2.4m wastewater treatment plant at Kilmallock in County Limerick will begin later this month, replacing a 1940s plant which has been outgrown by the size of the local population.

The Puducherry Pollution Control Committee has given green signal for the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) to be constructed near Kanaganeri at Kadirgamam. After studying the Rapid Environment Impact Assessment report prepared by two private firms appointed by Public Health Division of the Public Works Department, PPCC has given its nod for the project.

The City’s rapid growth has come at a heavy price – in the form of the loss of its lakes and ponds, according to a Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) report.

“These water bodies are now either repositories for sewage or have been turned into prime real estate,” a study conducted by the CSE revealed. “As a result, even with huge investments and projects for bringing water to the City – including the much debated Greater Bangalore Water and Sanitation Project (GBWASP) – the water crisis has become real and regular,” the report said.

The waste water is treated extensively and made fit for use. Singapore has an expertise in setting up ‘new water’ plants and is considered a successful model of waste water recycling and reuse.
