The Environment Ministry today designated protected status to another 12 species under the Environment Protection Act.

The protected species are all types of turtles found in the Maldives, dolphins, napoleon wrasse, giant clams, black coral, whale sharks, conch, all types of whales and corals, sharks, all types of clams, pregnant lobsters and lobsters less than 25 centimetres.

Small fish play a big role in the oceans and catches should be cut sharply to safeguard marine food chains from plankton to blue whales, an international team of experts said on Thursday.

Rising human exploitation of little fish -- including anchovy, sardine, herring, mackerel and capelin -- had had far less attention in marine research compared to big commercial species such as cod, tuna, swor

Tiny algae and a whale native to the Pacific have crossed a thawing Arctic Ocean in what may portend a marine invasion threatening Atlantic fish stocks, scientists said on Sunday.

The Pacific algae, absent from the North Atlantic for 800,000 years according to fossil records, apparently returned after climate change thawed sea ice and currents carried the microscopic plants across the Arctic Oc

Wildlife experts and volunteers in the Florida Keys have rescued seven of a group of pilot whales stranded in shallow waters and are using boats and a helicopter to locate more of the animals, officials said on Friday.

At least three of the group had died after around 16 of the marine mammals became stranded since late on Thursday in shallows and on flats in the waters off Cudjoe Key, a labyrin

Rare sighting:The largest mammals on Earth seen off the Mangalore coast.

KOCHI: Two blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus), the largest mammals on Earth, were recently spotted off the Mangalore coast during a marine survey carried out by the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Kochi.

The Gulf oil spill has ruined a vital stretch of feeding habitat for whale sharks -probably one of the world's largest fish, says a new research.

Around 4.9 million barrels of oil (one barrel is equivalent to 159 litres) flowed into an area south of the Mississippi River Delta, where one-third of all the northern Gulf of Mexico whale shark sightings have occurred in recent years, say scientists

European nations agreed on Friday to set up fishing-free zones in remote parts of the Atlantic Ocean in the world's first high seas network of protected areas beyond the control of national governments.

Environment ministers from 15 European states, forming the OSPAR group overseeing the North-East Atlantic, said they would seek recognition of the six areas at the United Nations and from the Un

Only 24 of several dozen pilot whales stranded on a remote northern New Zealand beach survived a stormy first night ashore despite rescuers

Humans have reduced the abundance of many large marine vertebrates, including whales, large fish, and sharks, to only a small percentage of their pre-exploitation levels. Industrial fishing and whaling also tended to preferentially harvest the largest species and largest individuals within a population. We consider the consequences of removing these animals on the ocean's ability to store carbon.
