Central Team Apprised Of Drought-Like Situation Despite Recent Rains

Gandhinagar:The Gujarat government has asked the Government of India (GoI) to provide Rs 450 crore as “help” to fight vulnerable nutrition levels in 132 talukas, mainly belonging to Saurashtra, Kutch and North Gujarat, where the government believes a drought-like situation prevails, despite recent rains. The demand comes significantly close on the heels of Narendra Modi’s controversial statement where the chief minister said that middle class girls are so health conscious that they do not consume milk, hence suffer from poor nutrition levels.

Gandhinagar The state government on Wednesday announced its new Textile Industry Promotion Policy, 2012, which offers a slew of incentives for cotton growers as well as textile mills in the state.

“The objective of the new policy is to safeguard the interests of cotton farmers, better price realisation in national and international markets and value addition in the entire chain. It is also to protect the cotton-growers of Gujarat from the present Congress-ruled UPA government’s anti-farmer and anti-export policies, Minister of State (MOS) for Industry and Mines and state government Spokesperson Saurabh Patel said while announcing the policy.

AHMEDABAD: Get ready for a ride on the first 'caterpillar' buses in Ahmedabad. These buses will be the new breed that will be joining the existing BRTS bus fleet. Technically called the 'articulated bus', these buses are 18-meter long and can seat 130 passengers. Each of these new BRTS caterpillar buses will cost close to Rs 1.2 crore.

In the next two weeks, the special 11-member committee on 'Urban Bus' of the union urban development ministry will come out with a detailed specifications for these buses. There are articulated buses running in Chennai, but they are not fit to run on BRTS corridor.

AHMEDABAD: The population of vultures in the city may not have shown a decline in the 2010 census, but the expert scavenger is quickly losing ground here. Ahmedabad has seen a drop of about 44 per cent in the bird's population in just two years, according to latest figures.

This is the third largest drop after Surat and Amreli districts. The two districts have reported a drop of around 65 per cent. These figures were revealed during the vulture count conducted by the Gujarat Ecological Education and Research ( GEER). Some of the birds have also migrated from Ahmedabad to Mehsana.

London: A new report by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) has commended the Jyotigram Yojana launched by the Gujarat government in 2003 that provides 24-hour power supply to villages in the state.

The report, titled ‘Feeding a Thirsty World: Challenges and Opportunities for a Water and Food Secure Future’, has been published as the institute’s input for the ongoing 2012 World Water Week in Stockholm from August 26 to 31. The report mentions achievements of the Jyotigram Yojana launched by the Narendra Modi government in September 2003 while warning about water scarcity and its impact on food production and for the estimated global population of 9 billion by 2050.
