The concept of local food is appealing to many consumers. But it is difficult to define what actually constitutes local food. Given the globalised nature of agricultural markets, bread baked in a small village bakery in England may be made from grain grown in Canada. Similarly, many of the inputs to a West Country dairy farm selling local ice cream may come from outside the UK.
CHENNAI: Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam on Tuesday introduced a Bill in the Assembly seeking to regulate agricultural practice and to establish an agricultural council.
At present there is no law for regularisation of agriculture in the State. The Bill is also for registration of agriculture practitioners in the State and to establish Tamil Nadu State Agriculture Council.
The Principal Secretary for Food Processing and Harvest Technology, Agriculture and Horticulture Department, Raghavan Suresh, informed that the Department will develop adequate post-harvest technologies in all districts.
June 1: The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, directed the Agriculture Technology Mission to work out the modalities for implementing cooperative farming in AP. As per the novel method, which is already being practised in countries like Israel, China and Vietnam, entire land measuring more than 1,000 acres in a particular village is pooled and jointly farmed.
Agroforestry has high potential for simultaneously satisfying three important objectives viz., protecting and stabilizing the ecosystems; producing a high level of output of economic goods; and improving income and basic materials to rural population. Besides, agroforestry is capable to conserve natural resources through various systems under different agroclimatic regions.
