NEW DELHI: The Centre on Friday said none of the Ayurvedic medicines exported by leading Indian manufacturers has toxic heavy metals beyond permissible limits.

Denying a report in a U.S. journal that detectable levels of lead, mercury or arsenic were found in some Ayurvedic products, Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss said drug samples were tested after the report and nothing wrong was found.

Vijayawada, Sept. 14: The minister of state for health and family welfare, Ms Panabaka Lakshmi, announced that the Union Cabinet has approved the allocation Rs 600 crore to encourage medicinal plantations by tobacco farmers in the country. She laid a foundation stone for Advanced Ayurvedic Research Centre for vector-borne diseases at Payakapuram Rajivnagar in the outskirts of city on Sunday.

Perturbed over repeated complaints of higher metal contents in ayurvedic and unani products by health regulatory agencies of countries like the UK, US, Canada and Singapore, the Union health ministry is now working on bringing out a national policy on the issue. Health ministry is working with the World Health Organisation (WHO) to formulate good manufacturing practise (GMP) regulations for country's more than nine thousand units involved in manufacturing ayurvedic and unani medicines.
