The Indian Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has been considering the possibility of leapfrogging from Bharat Stage (BS) IV emission standards in April 2017 to BS VI emission standards in April 2020. The Parliamentary Committee on Petroleum and Natural Gas has endorsed the idea.

Directly aping Euro norms might be a problem considering the driving conditions peculiar to India that might require the adaptation of critical components to work in these conditions.

Move from BS III to IV is supposed to bring down the particulate matter from cars to half

BS IV compliant four wheelers mandatory from April 1, 2017 all over country. With this only those newly manufactured four-wheeled vehicles, which are complaint with the BS-IV standards will be allowed to registered and move on roads with effect from the notified dates in the notified areas.

The universalisation of Bharat Stage (BS) -IV norms will reduce sulphur content of the fuel to 50 ppm and the implementation of BS-V / BS-VI emission norms will further reduce the sulphur content to 10 ppm and will improve the ambient air quality.
