The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) in New Delhi, an infl uential Indian non-governmental organisation led by Ms. Sunita Narain, a dynamic advocate for water, environment, human rights, democracy and health, will receive the 2005 Stockholm Water Prize from HM King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden in August.
In its Citation, the Nominating Committee lauded CSE and Ms. Narain.

HEARD of Plachimada? Over the last two-and-a-half years, people in this Kerala village have been agitating to get a neighbouring Coke plant shut down. According to them, Coke's water mining has parched the lands of over 2,000 people.

A report of analysis of pesticide residues in soft drinks conducted by Centre for Science and Environment(CSE), was made public on 5th August, 2003. This Report was covered very prominently by both electronic and print media. In the Report it was stated that CSE found pesticide residues, in the samples of 12 soft drinks brands procured by it from open market in Delhi.

Effluent samples were collected from a tannery in Ambur, near North Arcot Dist, Tamil Nadu, India. The physico-chemical parameters of the effluent viz, colour, odour, pH, Electrical conductivity, TSS, TDS, BOD, COD, total hardness, calcium hardness, magnesium hardness, chloride, sulphate and total chromium were determined. The results revealed that almost all the parameters of Tannery Effluent were found to be high and exceeding the CPCB limits.

There is an increasing interest in community-based forest management as a potential approch for improving forest governance. India is among the few countries in the world where such an approach - called Joint Forest Management (JFM)-has not only been successfully introduced but also achieved large-scale implementation, covering 18% of all state forests.
