Failed monsoons have led to an acute scarcity of water

Drinking water rationing is being considered in Kerala, the land of 44 rivers. Acute scarcity of drinking water has gripped most of the districts in the State, and the authorities may ration the quantity of drinking water for each household. The situation may turn worse during the peak summer months when most of the drinking water sources either dry up or are reduced to a trickle, it is feared.

Rajkot: Tempers are running high in the pilgrim town of Virpur. Without drinking water for the last 25 days, residents have called for a bandh on Thursday to vent their anger. The bandh call comes barely 10 days after a group of women ransacked the municipality office in Jetpur town to protest against the scarcity of water.

Bangalore’s drinking water crisis is not going to end in a hurry. But, the year 2012 witnessed the pinnacle of this crisis, particulary during summer.

Residents of the newly added BBMP areas, however, had a reason for some hope by the end of the year with the commissioning of the much-awaited Cauvery IV stage II phase by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) in October. The last and the final drawal from the Cauvery basin to the City will be supplying an additional 500 million litres (mld) of water per day wherein the City will be receiving a total of 1,400 mld by January 2013.

Warmer weather and a growing population may in a few decades cause a water shortage for 40 million people who depend on the Colorado river in the US, researchers say.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Tuesday told the Assembly that the Minister for Water Resources had repeatedly brought to the notice of his counterpart in Tamil Nadu the need to expeditiously release the water. “But Tamil Nadu has not responded positively. In this context, the Cabinet will on Wednesday decide what measures, including legal, the State should take,” Mr. Chandy said.

City residents faced the worst-ever water crisis during the one-year tenure of Mayor Raj Bala Malik, which ends on December 31.

The agriculture production commissioner, Alok Ranjan has asked officials to complete the national rural drinking water programme on a priority basis.

SHILLONG: As global warming is taking its toll, a remarkable change in climate is seen. The same is experienced in Meghalaya, where the crisis for drinking water is one of the biggest problems despite the state receiving good rainfall.

To tackle this problem before it goes out of hand, an immediate need to provide information, educate and communicate with the masses on the water-related issues was felt. With this thought in mind, the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) under the Ministry of water resources, government of India has started a nation-wide campaign amongst the school children through painting competition with the theme, ‘Replete ground water before it depletes’.
