KENDRAPADA: The state government has banned fishing by mechanised boats from April 15 to May 31 to conserve fish stock in sea during breeding period.

BHUBANESWAR: A high-level committee set up by the Union ministry of environment and forests (MoEF) to review the mega Posco steel project in the state has spelled fresh trouble for the much-hyped project.

The committee headed by K Roy Paul was constituted as per the March 30, 2012 order of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which had suspended the environment clearance granted to the project.

The annual ban on fishing in East Coast area will commence from Monday, April 15 and continue till May 31. The government of Andhra Pradesh has imposed the ban to protect marine life. Engine propelled trawlers and mechanised boats are not allowed for fishing activities during the ban period.

The ban coincides with the spawning season for fish, during which they release eggs. As trawlers use fishing nets with small gaps, eggs and young ones (fries) would be caught in the net, leading to resource depletion.
