This issue of the Water Resources Series presents an analysis of studies and collaborative work undertaken by ESCAP with national research units and individual experts on developing frameworks for flood management in Asian and Pacific cities.

The Guidelines for Submission, Appraisal and Clearance of Irrigation and Multipurpose Project, 1989 had been prepared by the Project Appraisal Organisation (PAO), Central Water commission (CWC) on the basis of the recommendations of the National Conference of Irrigation and Water Resources Ministers held in July, 1986.

CUDDALORE: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has sanctioned a sum of Rs. 301 crore for undertaking permanent flood control measures in Cuddalore district, according to Health Minister M.R.K.Panneerselvam.

He inspected water sources and flood-affected areas in the district on Sunday. He was accompanied by Collector P. Seetharaman, District Revenue Officer S. Natarajan, MLA D.

CHENNAI: Twenty five automatic weather stations will be set up across the city to develop an early warning system for flood monitoring. The data would be used to provide information about the areas that are likely to be inundated and help the authorities plan evacuation and rescue measures.

Wary of the downstream impact of the dam constructed by China on the river Brahmaputra, the State Government has decided to move the Centre urging the latter to take up the issue with its Chinese counterpart.

Floating agriculture is a good popular practice of the low-lying areas the south-western parts of Bangladesh where lands remain submerged most of time in a year. Not only to cope during floods, floating agriculture is
also a potential means to increase the food production in the country.
