No matter how dire the disaster and how pious the promises that it will not be allowed to happen again, it seems the Goa government just cannot get its act together when it comes to protecting its citizens from the vagaries of nature. No lessons have been learnt from the calamitous Canacona deluge last year.

Woes of Bhogdoi Part-1

JORHAT, July 28: Government apathy and illegal settling of human habitation along the embankment of Bhogdoi River is posing a serious threat to the existance of the dyke.

Mumbai Five years after the deluge on July 26, 2005, a public meeting held at the Maharashtra Nature Park, Mahim, to discuss the status of the Mithi river and the work done by officials to combat future floods, saw just a handful audience.

THE Institute of Remote Sensing, Anna University on Thursday identified 756 vulnerable pockets in the city in areas like GN Chetty Road, Virugambakkam, MKB Nagar, East-Velachery and Porur as areas with high risk of flooding, after it had conducted a flood-risk mapping of Chennai and its suburbs using ultra modern technology called Airborne Laser Terrain Mapping.

Punjab wants a joint action plan with the Centre and neighbouring states to tackle natural calamity like floods that wreaked havoc in the northern states almost every year, said Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in Mohali on Monday.

CHONGQING, 18 JULY: More than 300 people remained trapped in flood and 12,300 others were evacuated early today in rain-soaked southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, said local authorities.
