Negotiating trade-offs - Choices about ecosystem services for poverty alleviation

Exploring the prospects of the ecosystem services approach for natural resource management and poverty alleviation in India, this paper points out that it is vital to have an understanding of the political economy of negotiations over natural resource use. An appreciation of the synergies and trade-offs between ecosystem services is equally important to develop better strategies for pro-poor ecosystem management.

Humans have been cutting Ethiopian forests for fuel and agriculture for centuries. Only about 35,000 fragments remain in the northern highlands, ranging in size from 3 to 300 hectares. NGO questions government’s clean chit to cement giants

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Government’s clean chit to cement plants which are breaching the forest conservation act has been out rightly questioned by the Maitshaphrang Movement, an NGO which used the RTI findings to reveal the alleged exploitation of forest by these cement giants in the Khliehriat sub-division of Jaintia Hills district.

Deputy Chief Minister, In-Charge, Mining and Geology Bindo M Lanong, two days ago, said, “The officials have attested that the areas under limestone mining are not under agriculture or dense forest areas.”
