Conservationists and politicians meeting in Bonn on Friday launched a new initiative to restore 150 million hectares (580,000 square miles) of deforested and degraded forests, reports the World Res

“Every place in Meghalaya has some mineral or the other. Should we exploit these non-renewable resources at great cost to the environment or use the renewable resources which are available in abundance?” the Chief Minister asked.

Gujarat’s environment and forest department is aiming to bring an additional area of 120 sq km along the state’s coastline under mangrove cover by the end of the financial year 2011-12.

Generating energy from crops instead of oil and coal can have counterproductive effects. “The use of biomass can lead to additional emissions of greenhouse gases”, says lead author Alexander Popp of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). “This is the case if forests get cut down to plant energy crops instead.” Forests are important CO2 sinks. At the same time, biomass is expected to play an important role in  future energy systems.

Bangalore :World Wildlife Fund (WWF) India has launched a campaign in the City urging people to support forest conservation.

The national youth-level campaign, known as ‘Cities for Forests’, focuses on creating awareness about the link between forests and human wellbeing.
