The Coimbatore Corporation Council on Monday resolved to ask the Chief Minister to sanction another water supply scheme for Coimbatore city. The resolution, proposed by Mayor S.M. Velusamy, said that it was difficult to meet the drinking water needs of the city and adjoining areas with water from the existing water supply schemes.

To enable supply of adequate water for residents of all wards in the city, there was a necessity for another water supply scheme, Pilloor III. Mr. Velusamy said that the Corporation was taking all possible efforts to address issues related to water shortage.

Mumbai has more undernourished children under the age of five than the whole of urban Maharashtra.

The State government has begun the process of identification of malnourished children below the age of six and not enrolled in the anganwadi centres, on the direction of the High Court.

The first health camp for such children is scheduled for July 15. However, sources in the Women and Child Development Department and the Department of Health and Family Welfare, responsible for the implementation of directions of the High Court, said this will be only a one-time exercise as there is no specific policy to deal with the problem yet.

KLEW: A serious irregularity has been unearthed over the implementation of the mid-day meal scheme in the Unitarian Lower Primary School in Upper Klew village in Ri-Bhoi district.

Students of the school are not getting their mid-day meal even though official records claim that mid-day meals are being provided to the students on a regular basis.

‘Replace multiple food items with single recipe for better consumption’ A committee set up by the High Court has suggested that the menu for children in anganwadis comprise fewer but tastier and more nutritional items to check malnutrition.

The committee, set up to look into deaths of children due to malnutrition in Raichur, has recommended that multiple food items provided under the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) should be replaced with fewer items to ensure better consumption among pregnant women, lactating mothers and children.
