The worst fear appears to have come true.
Oil spillage has begun from Black Rose, the cargo ship that sank on September 9 off the Bay of Bengal coast, nearly seven km away from Orissa's Paradip port.

The oil leakage threatens to severely damage the local marine resources and ecology.

Marine scientists from California are venturing this week to the middle of the North Pacific for a study of plastic debris accumulating across hundreds of miles (km) of open sea dubbed the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch."

The marine population and fishing industry that depend on them feel the impact of this change the most. The coastline has become more vulnerable to wave action and hurricanes.

Federal Government has decided to formulate new "Marine Pollution Act" to minimise adverse effects of water pollution on marine life and to develop effective monitoring system, and implementation of standards related to water pollution, said future Plan of Planning Commission.
