Rajasthan is one of the major groundnut producing states of the country. Groundnut is the principal oilseed crop of the kharif season of the state. The productivity of this crop is very low in this agro-climatic zone as compared to the state average productivity. This has been basically due to non-adoption of improved package of practices of groundnut cultivation by majority of the farmers.

Availability, accessibility and utilization of food are the three necessary conditions to achieve food security; yet food self sufficiency in India is often confused with the provisioning of food security. The country's self-sufficiency has also been dented with the massive imports of wheat in recent years.

Paddy sowing in the on-going Kharif season rose by 23 per cent to 14.88 million hectares so far against 12.1 million hectares in the same period last year.

Is there a global crisis unravelling? World food reserves are at their lowest in 25 years and the prices of most food crops are at a record high. This is causing inflation in several countries from Egypt to China even riots in Mexico and western Africa. G

This paper attempts to analyse the determinants and impact of adoption of IPM practices in groundnut. This study is a part of a project "Assessment of Adoption and Impact of IPM in Rainfed Crops" funded by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.

Agricultural sector has played a major role in the economic development of the country. India has achieved self-sufficiency in the foodgrain production. We could go back to our past and see how the development has taken place. How we have reached to a state of food security from a stage of situation where a major section of our population had very little or no access to food.

The rising gap between demand and production of edible oils has led to a fast rise in imports of vegetable oils since the eighties. About one half of current consumption of edible oils in recent years (1998-2002) is being met through imports. The policy of self-sufficiency in edible oils resulted in higher level of protection of oilseeds.
