Planted in the early 20th century to help control erosion, kudzu is a fast-growing invasive legume that fixes atmospheric nitrogen at a high rate. Humans continue to transform the global nitrogen cycle at a record pace, reflecting an increased combustion of fossil fuels, growing demand for nitrogen in agriculture and industry, and pervasive inefficiencies in its use. Much anthropogenic nitrogen is lost to air, water, and land to cause a cascade of environmental and human health problems.

The accumulation of nitrate in freshwater and coastal marine ecosystems is one of the consequences of the worldwide production of artificial fertilizers. Here it is shown that nitrate accumulation in ecosystems shows consistent and negative nonlinear correlations with organic carbon availability, along a continuum from soils, through freshwater systems and coastal margins, to the open ocean.

Levels of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide have increased since pre-industrial times, mainly because of agricultural activities. Among these changes it has been reported that livestock grazing substantially increases nitrous oxide emissions from temperate grasslands.

Most emissions of nitrous oxide from semi-arid, temperate grasslands
usually occur during the spring thaw. The effects that grazing has on plant
litter and snow cover dramatically reduce these seasonal emissions.

NEW DELHI: India has switched on its first public air purifier in the heart of capital New Delhi as part of an experiment that backers say could help other smog-choked cities in emerging countries.

This work presents an estimate of the air pollution from municipal solid waste transport haulage sector for the city of Kolkata. About 3000 MT/day of solid waste are generated in the city presuming generation rate of 450-500 gm/capita resident/day. On an average, 205 private carriers transport 60% of daily generated garbage (responsible for 44% of total air pollutants from municipal solid waste transport), while around 109 nos. of departmental vehicles transport the remaining 40% of waste (responsible for 56% of total pollution emission from waste transport).
