The impact of thermal power plant emissions on foliar elemental concentration was assessed in this study. In addition to direct effects of deposition of air pollutants, soil mediated processes can also bring deterioration in plant growth due to altered soil characteristics.

Previous studies have shown associations between air pollution and risk for lung cancer. The authors investigated whether traffic and the concentration of nitrogen oxides (NOx) at the residence are associated with risk for lung cancer.

Denitrification, the biological conversion of nitrate to gaseous nitrogen, removes a substantial fraction of the nitrogen from aquatic ecosystems, and can therefore help to reduce eutrophication effects.
