Any serious attempt to deal with climate change must involve transport. Transport accounts for 13% of all world greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, though this figure takes into account CO2 sources other than fuel combustion, such as forestry, land-use and biomass burning. A look at CO2 emissions from fuel combustion only shows the transport sector accounts for about 23% worldwide and about 30% in the OECD area.

Transport volumes and structures in China change drastically as a result of economic and social development in the country. These changes are associated with increasing energy consumption and negative impacts on the environment, e.g. emissions of greenhouse gases and toxic air pollutants affecting not only the micro and macro climate but also health.

The bus rapid transit (BRT) system will not be extended on the first corridor till perfection is achieved. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit told this to RITES and officials concerned after a review meeting held at her residence today. RITES is carrying out the construction of the corridor.

Delhi BJP chief Harsh Vardhan has criticised the statement of Sunita Narayan, director,Centre for Science and Enviornment. She had given a clean chit to the BRT corridor and termed it as useful for Delhi. BJP MLA Vijat Jolly has also demanded the scrapping of the corridor project ,saying that it has created traffic snarls in South Delhi. Vardhan said that the way in which thousands of trees have been felled and many lives have been lost, dozen have been injured, the Delhi government should stop the construction of six other corridors.

After spending several gruelling hours under a hot on Thursday sun monitoring the traffic flow on the Ambedkar Nagar-Moolchand Bus rapid transit system (BRTS) corridor, officials worked hard to sort out glitches, especially after chief minister Sheila Dikshit's veiled threat to scrap the new bus corridor. Delhi's transport minister Haroon Yusuf, who made a personal visit to the stretch, said that efforts were being made to rectify the loopholes and that the things would further improve in days to come.

Outrage over the illconceived BRT corridor rocked Parliament on Tuesday with members cutting across party affiliations protesting against the hardship inflicted on commuters in south Delhi by thoughtless planners.
