Former adviser to a caretaker government Prof Jamilur Reza Chowdhury yesterday called for starting formal education on disaster management in the universities of the country.

He was speaking as chief guest at the inaugural session of a workshop on 'National Plan for Disaster Management' at the Biam auditorium in the city.

The workshop was organised by Disaster Management Bureau (DMB) which is preparing the national plan in collaboration with the UNDP.

UNDP's resident representative in Nepal, Robert Piper said Wednesday that the Government of Nepal has not been able to translate the risk agenda into action as most buildings constructed in the capital are hardly earthquake-resistant.
Speaking to media persons at a program in Kathmandu, he also expressed serious concerns as Nepal could be hit by major earthquake like that of 1934. He also urged the government to implement the New Disaster Management Act, 2007, which may prevent casualties.

The Government has taken special moves with the assistance of UNDP to mitigate the floods and landslides in various parts of the country including Ratnapura, Nuwara-Eliya, Badulla, Kandy, Kalutara, Colombo and Gampaha Districts owing to the rains, Disaster Management and Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said.

WITH oil prices ruling high despite recent correction, domestic companies such as Reliance Industries (RIL), Tata BP Solar, Essar Power, Suzlon and Moser Baer are investing more in renewable energy.

While Suzlon, Moser Baer, Indowind and Webel raised $1.4 billion overseas in 2007 through convertible bonds for investment in green energy, RIL, Tata BP Solar and Essar Power raised $628 million on domestic stock exchanges in 2007.
