DMRC has submitted to the NGT that the Corporation has carried out further inspection of its own and it has been found that it is possible for the Corporation to install rain water harvesting systems on 17 more Metro Stations.

Half of humanity – 3.5 billion people – currently live in cities and by 2055 an estimated 75% of the world's population will live in urban areas. Cities occupy just 2% of the Earth's land, but account for over 70% of both energy consumption and carbon emissions.

Installing rainwater harvesting (RWH) system in buildings seems to be just another Government order for people in the City, instead of being a social responsibility. Although the initial deadline (December 31, 2011) to install the RWH systems evoked quick response from residents, with many booking filters with dealers/plumbers, it fizzled out once the deadline was extended to March 31, 2012.

To take stock of water bodies in the city, including ponds that have been filled in and encroached upon, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is planning to map them.
