This analysis by Greenpeace shows that fresh water used in thermal power plants in seven drought affected states could meet requirements of 50 million people. In fact, all power plants in the country consume water that could meet needs of 251 million people.

Imaging land subsidence induced by groundwater extraction in Beijing (China) using satellite radar interferometry

Beijing is one of the most water-stressed cities in the world. Due to over-exploitation of groundwater, the Beijing region has been suffering from land subsidence since 1935. In this study, the Small Baseline InSAR technique has been employed to process Envisat ASAR images acquired between 2003 and 2010 and TerraSAR-X stripmap images collected from 2010 to 2011 to investigate land subsidence in the Beijing region. The maximum subsidence is seen in the eastern part of Beijing with a rate greater than 100 mm/year.

Judgement of the Supreme Court of India regarding drought like situation prevailing in many states of India, 11/05/2016

Supreme Court in this 53-page verdict delivered on May 11, 2016 pulled up the government over a lack of preparedness for the drought which struck at least 10 states across the country. The apex court ordered creating a national plan to tackle the crisis, a disaster fund and standard procedures for declaring areas drought-hit.

The Court has also been informed that at present on a rough estimate about 22 MLD sewage is being discharged towards the Gandhi Sagar Lake whereas the remaining sewage which is being generated is discharged in different directions.
