Genetically modified crops or organisms (GMOs) are produced by the now well-known branch of molecular biology, the recombinant DNA technology or genetic engineering. The share of GM crops in world agriculture is increasing steadily. From 1996 to 2009, the cultivation of GM crops has seen an 80-fold increase. In India, 65% of the agricultural land is still dependent on monsoon. There is need for more investment in biotechnology-driven solutions to increase yields

With growing scarcity of water and deteriorating quality, water resources management in India is becoming more challenging with the passage of time. This article discusses the likely impacts in the water sector and the overarching actions that India need to initiate to overcome/manage them.

Multi-channel analysis of surface waves (MASW) and micrometer array measurements (MAM) have been carried out in the flood-prone areas of Selimpaşa, Kavakli, Ortakoy and Kadikoy in Turkey to understand several soil problems, especially soil amplification during earthquakes.

Heavy rains on 18 and 19 September 2010 in the Ganga watershed associated with a regional monsoon event that occurred between Myanmar and Middle East caused disastrous landslips in Uttarakhand, Indian Central Himalaya and floods in the plains of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. Relation between quantum of rainfall per day and slope failure has been examined in the light of similar studies in other parts of Himalaya. The cloud movement and rainfall pattern

When looking at biomass power, we must keep in mind the alternative uses. The nexus between food, water and energy has to be viewed in detail. A country like India produces nearly 500 million tonnes of agro waste annually.
Such agro wastes are used. (Correspondence)

India has the second largest population, one of fastest growing economies and is ranked third in greenhouse gas emissions by fossil-fuel burning in the world. However, there has been little monitoring of atmospheric CO2 concentration over India to date. Here we reanalyse pioneering atmospheric CO2 observations at Cape Rama, India (CRI) during the period from February 1993 to October 2002, using three forward transport models to simulate atmospheric CO2 and separate tracers of terrestrial and oceanic fluxes, and fossil-fuel emissions.

Creativity or out-of-the-box thinking is evenly distributed in all societies in the world. On that count rural India should be a major source of creative minds that has remained untapped. Due to our city-centric policies, it may take decades before modern science and technology (S&T) reaches rural India. Meanwhile the Moving Academy of Medicine and Biomedicine, Pune has developed a module to nurture talent in the villages. The module essentially consists of a base laboratory and villagelevel hub of modern S&T with extensive innovative outreach programmes for village schools.

The Indian economy has been growing at 8% during the last decade. The service sector has contributed immensely to this growth and continues to grab a large share of the gross domestic product (GDP). However, the agricultural sector is still the biggest employer in India and supports the livelihood of more than half the population. Given the dependence of such a large proportion of Indians on the four-month monsoon season – the storage, conservation and protection of water is of paramount importance for the economy as well as health of the nation.

The Indian spiny-tailed lizard is a unique reptile that belongs to the family Agamidae. According to Wilms et al., its generic name has been recently resurrected from Uromastyx hardwickii to Sara hardwickii. It occurs in large numbers in isolated patches in the drylands of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat (Kachchh) and Pakistan. (Correspondence)

Doing nothing can be a very successful strategy in tiding over difficult situations. Seasoned administrators have often perfected the art of inaction. Sometimes doing nothing can be costly. Fires must be put out and the critically ill rushed to medical care. Even while pondering on the situations in which inaction seemed to be strategically advantageous, my attention was drawn to an editorial in
