Delhi Has Only Half Its Requirement Of 11,000 Buses, Number Of Private Vehicles Rising

New Delhi:More than 46 lakh people use public transport, specifically buses, every day in Delhi. To meet this demand, there are 5,216 Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses and another 1,000 under the cluster bus scheme, but the numbers are woefully short for the city and just halfway to the transport department’s estimated requirement of 11,000 buses in 2010.

Excessive Use Of Private Vehicles Creating Havoc In City, Says IISc Mobility Survey

Lucknow: Lucknow urgently needs a robust public transport system to tackle the increasing urban roadways congestion, noise, air pollution, and traffic accidents, says a mobility survey conducted across five Indian cities.

In a bid to improve the public transport system here, the Centre has sanctioned 50 buses for the city under its Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) Scheme.

The Patiala Municipal Corporation (MC) will launch the bus service and has identified 5 acre land near Ghalori Gate for setting up a bus depot. Though the MC had sought Rs 7 crore for setting up the depot, the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee approved Rs 3 crore.

The Union Urban Development Ministry has sanctioned 1,080 buses to seven States under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission programme.

State Road Transport Undertakings (SRTUs) in India provide for the mobility of people by offering passenger services. The performance review of these SRTUs is generally made by assessing their physical and financial parameters.

To promote green technology and attract passengers to make use of public transport, the Jaipur City Transport Service limited (JCTSL) will soon introduce articulated (double buses) and hybrid (battery operated) buses in the city.

According to officials, a total of four buses, including two articulated and two hybrid buses, will be procured in the new fleet of JCTSL. Recently, the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) has sanctioned 286 buses for the city.

Mitra said there would also be smaller 20-seater buses for which license would be given to unemployed youths

A total of 1000 new buses under the JNNURM scheme would be on the roads in Kolkata by March next year, Transport Minister Madan Mitra said today.

China's capital Beijing, regularly shrouded in hazardous air pollution, plans to replace its oil-burning buses with greener models by 2017 to help clear the smog, state news agency Xinhua said.
