MARGAO: Goa Legislative Assembly Speaker Rajendra Arlekar and Environment Minister Alina Saldanha on Sunday batted for cycling as a means to control air pollution and protect the environment.

Arlekar went a step further to say that the government of the day will be compelled to make a lane for bicycles, while expressing his happiness that many MLAs in the just concluded Assembly session have rooted for bicycle lanes on the road. In her address at the valedictory function of the rally organized by Rotary Club of Margao Midtown, the Environment Minister said that cycling at short distances will not only keep one healthy, but also help protect the air and flora and fauna. “Students and adults alike can use cycles as a means of travel to the school and markets. This will keep you fit and healthy and also save the environment”, she added.

Solar bicycle is the need of the hour since it is less polluting and will save fuel, says Shyam Kumar S, technical director, Innovation Experience, a Thiruvananthapuram-based non-profit organisation.

In a major initiative the organisation has developed two solar bicycles at a cost of Rs 40,000 each, these are now in use in the Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram campuses of UST Global, the founding and funding partner of Innovation Experience.

JAIPUR: The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) citizen's survey findings have offered the authorities real-time data to take some urgent steps to check rising pollution levels and encourage walking and cycling as feasible options for residents to travel small distances.

The report stated that 40% residents prefer to walk or cycle to nearby destinations in the city. This is an indication enough for the state to realize that given an option of walker-friendly roads, many would prefer to walk over using private cars to travel.
