BEIJING: Two wells as deep as 2,000 metres would provide heat for a 7,500-seat gymnasium in winter, the competing venue for the badminton tournament of Beijing Olympic Games, and another 12 wells are used for the cooling system in summer.

LUCKNOW: In a massive energy conservation drive, use of compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) has been made compulsory in government buildings, aided institutions, corporations and autonomous bodies in Uttar Pradesh. An order to this effect was issued by the State government on July 15. It has been estimated that with the use of CFL, consumption of energy would be cut down by about 10 per cent.

CHENNAI: Acknowledging that the State is suffering from power shortage of 1,000 megawatt (MW), Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veeraswami on Friday announced that the scheme of "power holiday' will come into force from Monday.

In Chennai, the supply would be disrupted for one hour a day. The city would be classified into eight divisions and each division would not have supply for an hour. Other municipal corporations and municipalities would have to go without supply for two hours.
