Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Bidu Bhusan Harichandan & Others Vs District Collector Khurdha & dated 05/05/2020 regarding illegal laterite stone mining at 40 different sites in the Khurdha District of Odisha to an extent of about 500 acres encompassing several villages including Tapanga, Anda and JhinkiJhari under Nijigarh Tapang Panchayat. The area involves amongst others cashew jungle, gramya jungle and gochar land. Neither Environmental Clearance nor Consent to Operate have been obtained from the respective authorities.

Linear infrastructure development is an important driver of forest fragmentation leading to habitat and biodiversity loss as well as disruption of critical ecosystem processes. The tropical forests of India are increasingly impacted by infrastructure development. Little quantitative information is available on the extent of fragmentation due to linear infrastructure on these habitats.

Few studies exist that document how high-elevation Andean ecosystems recover naturally after the cessation of human activities and this can limit the implementation of cost-effective restoration actions. We assessed Andean forest (Polylepis stands) and páramo grassland recovery along an elevation gradient (3,600–4,350 m.a.s.l.) in the Yanacocha Reserve (Ecuador) where natural recovery has been allowed since 1995.

Forest Survey of India, Dehradun, an organization under the Ministry carries out the assessment of forest and tree cover (FTC) of the country biennially and the findings are published in India State of Forest Report (ISFR). The total FTC of the country, as per the ISFR 2019 is 8,07,276 km2 which is 24.56% of the total geographical area of the country. This is an increase of 5,188 km2 (forest cover 3,976 km2 and tree cover 1,212 km2) as compared to that of FTC in ISFR-2017 and 13,209 km2 (forest cover 10,754 km2, tree cover 2,455 km2) as compared to FTC in ISFR, 2015.

As per the information received from the State Forest Department of Uttar Pradesh, six persons have lost their lives in man-leopard conflict in Bijnaur District of Uttar Pradesh during the year 2019-2020.
