An ingredient in weedkiller has been detected in a bottle of green tea sold at a Tokyo supermarket, and police and its manufacturer suspect the substance was deliberately mixed into the bottle, officials said Saturday. The incident involved a bottle of Healthya, a hit product made by Tokyo-based Kao Corp. touted as dissolving fat. A 43-year-old man in Nerima Ward who suffered minor diarrhea after drinking the tea told police the cap on the bottle appeared to be loose when he opened it.

Think about this next time you upgrade your PC: toxic metals from old electronic goods are finding their way into school grounds in China. Seventy per cent of the world's discarded phones and computers are exported to China. Most are processed in family-run workshops, where the circuit boards are ripped out of old equipment and heated over open fires. This melts the solder, allowing individual components to be removed and resold. The bare circuit boards are then burned.

Beware Chinese rice. That's the message following the discovery of rice consignments containing an experimental genetically modified strain called Bt63. From 15 April, all rice imported from China into the European Union must be certified as free of Bt63.

At least 17 persons, most of them children and women, have died in three Upper Assam districts of Golaghat, Jorhat and Sibsagar after having consumed wild poisonous mushrooms in the past four days. The state Government has now warned people not to consume unidentified mushrooms. While 10 persons have died in Golaghat, five have fallen victims in Sibsagar and two others in Jorhat. Seven of those who have died are children. At least 20 others are battling for life in different hospitals.

The Consumers International (CI) battle against marketing of unhealthy food to children has gathered support from domestic groups as well. The London-based CI is an independent consumer network with over 220 member organisations in 115 countries. Ahmedabad's Consumer Education and Research Centre (CERC) and Chennai's Consumers Association of India have joined CI's international research on the subject. Other than these, participating organisations are from the Philippines, Fiji, Malaysia and Korea.
